The Cathedral, the Casino, and the Distorted Square
This week, the hottest article on the Chinese internet was written by a founder worth billions of dollars. An actress's real name in the title, first person, from secret crush to breakup, to money, to egg retrieval — and a note at the end: entirely fictional. The same day, his lawyers confirmed a lawsuit against her and her parents, for upwards of thirty million yuan. One line was pulled out and made into countless memes — an egg weighs 3.5 micrograms; fifty million dollars in cash weighs 2.5 tons. Two days later she answered with self-mockery; one day more, and he said: this ends with me.
I do not know which parts of the article are true. Nobody knows — every detail has only one side's telling. But that no longer matters. Hundreds of millions read it, laughed, forwarded it. It has become a story, and once a story is being told by hundreds of millions at once, it no longer needs to be true.
The second I finished reading, before the smile could surface, there was a very brief, unnameable tightening in my body.
This essay begins from that tightening. It walked me through three buildings.

1 · When the Crooked Square Was Wired, Absurdity Became Free
Refuse the so-called illusory stories that do not align with your inner core. However great a dream, if it does not align with what is inside you, it can be ignored. This is the first assumption.
The square was always crooked. It was never a place of reason — groceries, chess, jeering, gossip. Expecting the square to run straight is like expecting a crowd to be quiet. But the old square had one backstop: every sentence had a face, and every face had to sleep on its own words. What played out this week is the product of an assembly line: feed in a real person, out comes a story with a villain and a victim, stamp it "entirely fictional," and the show opens legally.
At twelve, in St. Petersburg, Ayn Rand watched her father's pharmacy nationalized, watched everyone tell the same great story; in 1926 she reached America on a six-month visa, and her first stop happened to be another story assembly line — Hollywood. She later wrote both lines into The Fountainhead: the true villain, Toohey, never built a single building. He manufactured the story of "what good architecture is," with a single weapon — making every person believe that his own judgment was less reliable than the square's.
Now the assembly line has been wired. It used to cost more to manufacture absurdity than to recognize it, so however crooked the square got, it eventually slowed; after AI, for the first time, it flips — manufacturing a story is ten thousand times cheaper than verifying one, and one step further, it is free. Absurdity became free, and the lie now always reaches the square before you do. In May 2023, one AI-generated fake photo of an "explosion at the Pentagon," passed along by a few verified accounts, knocked the US market down within minutes before the debunking pulled it back — the lie took minutes; verification needed someone to drive to the site. By the time truth has its shoes on, the trial has already let out. Truth did not lose on the merits. It lost on the timetable.
And the crookedness is not merely grown — it is operated. Leaked internal documents showed that Facebook once weighted the "angry" reaction at five times a like in its ranking — anger is not the square's byproduct, it is fuel. The bills have started arriving: a five-billion-dollar federal fine; a hundred-and-fifty-billion-dollar class claim by Rohingya refugees, alleging the algorithm systematically amplified hate. For the first time, the square's operator has been written into a complaint as the playwright of the absurd. Distortion is not an accident. It is a business model.
So this chapter's homework is one word: discern. When manufacturing is ten thousand times cheaper than verifying, most of what rushes at you is dirty signal — not wrong signal, but signal never born to carry truth at all, born only to borrow your finger. You have no time to verify item by item, and you don't need to. You need a detector.
That detector is the faint tightening. It gives no reasons and needs none. It is only telling you: this story did not grow from you. You need not judge true or false, need not pick a side. You only need to not sign for it. Havel's greengrocer, who every day set "Workers of the world, unite!" beside the onions, did not believe the sentence — everyone simply displayed it. The distorted square never needs you to believe the lie. It only needs you to live inside it.
"Can be ignored" is harsher than "must be refused." Refusal still engages; it still grants a position. To ignore means the thing is simply not in your coordinate system — however loud it gets, it is none of yours. This is the first assumption, prior to all argument, because all argument happens only after you have decided what deserves arguing."
2 · When the Bloody Casino Got Sensors, You Became the Chips
Refusing to align, once you are sure of the refusal, does not mean you cannot learn. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Learn his abilities, and become better than him. Do not cede the world to those you despise.
At the end of the square, the building with the brightest lights is the casino. The loudest line of the week — 3.5 micrograms against 2.5 tons — came out of here. The casino was always naked; of the three buildings it is the only one that does not lie: the square performs, the cathedral has its false prophets too, but the casino posts its rules in plain figures at the door — everything is on the board, everything has odds.
First, concede one thing objectively: the casino's underlying laws are not themselves wrong. Exchange is real, contract is real, and honoring your losses is an ancient form of honesty. The casino's evil is not in the word "exchange," but in hauling onto the table what should never be exchanged. Acknowledge the laws objectively; honor the contracts one by one — then transcend on that foundation. Transcendence is not sidestepping the laws; it is standing on them to reach what they cannot govern.
AI has pushed this building's cruelty up one grade. The naked casino has been fitted with sensors: it used to post the same odds to everyone, and the house won on probability; now the sensors press against each person day and night — internal documents exposed in 2017 showed the platform could identify, in real time, when teenagers felt "insecure" or "worthless," and hand a child an ad at his lowest moment. And that was only AI's infancy. For the first time, the house knows the gambler better than the gambler knows himself; for the first time, the information asymmetry has fully inverted: you are naked, and it is not.AI
And the casino no longer needs doors; everyone carries their own table. Robinhood made stock trading a game — zero commission, confetti on every fill — while its business model was selling users' order flow to market makers: you think you are the player, when every tap of yours is the merchandise being sold. The delivery riders face another kind of sensing: year by year the algorithm compresses the delivery window, and every record forced through a red light becomes everyone's new standard. The older thinkers had a name for this — alienation: the man-made system turning around and using the human as a part. Sensors merely gave alienation millisecond precision for the first time. When what is being weighed is no longer money but the person, you are no longer the gambler seated at the table. You are the chips.
Facing this building, both instinctive reactions are wrong. One is worship: he is so formidable — does he know some truth we don't? Ability and values are two fully independent lines; a man can travel very far on the ability line while never leaving the start of the values line. The other is squeamishness: don't look, don't touch, retreat into a clean little circle of mutual nodding — that is not holding your ground, that is potting yourself as a houseplant; and the whole of Atlas Shrugged is about whom the world belongs to after the people with both ability and values have walked out together. "Do not cede the world to those you despise" — whether Rand truly wrote this line, I am not sure. But what it says is true.
There is only one correct move: go in, learn to deal, and don't believe in the God of Gamblers. Rand despised Hollywood, yet spent more than a decade inside it — extra, script reader, screenwriter — and walked away with the only thing that machine truly had: how to make millions of people hear a story through to the end. That ability later went, all of it, into The Fountainhead. If a man you despise is still standing there, it is almost certainly because he is better than you at something.
But go in wearing a membrane — ability passes through, values do not. Jimmy Wales in his youth was a futures trader and moderated a Rand mailing list; his daughter is named after a Rand heroine. Then he founded the thing Rand would probably have called a mob — Wikipedia. What he took from Rand was not the story of the individual against the collective; it was an epistemology: a good Wikipedian holds neutrality and reliable sources above any political opinion of his own. Membranes also tear: Greenspan went from Rand's inner circle all the way to the chairmanship of the Fed, and in 2008 admitted before Congress that the model he had trusted for forty years had a flaw. The membrane does not mean staying far from your enemies — it means that however close you draw to anyone, including those you worship, values must never pass through automatically.
So the second rule has two motions: draw near, then surpass. "Become better than him" is not ambition, it is duty — having refused his story, you owe the proof that the thing can be done without it. Otherwise your refusal is only a pose.
3 · The Cathedral's Old Clock, and the Demon That Synthesizes
When One and Two fight, stand with One — decisively.
One and Two are certain to fight. Ability never comes bare; it always arrives wrapped in a story, and every act of peeling has its moment — his method works better, his numbers look prettier, and all it takes is being slightly less aligned in one small place, and it's yours.
The egg-against-cash comparison — its killing power lies exactly here. It is not obscene — it is consistent. It follows "everything can be converted" all the way to the bottom. Everyone laughed; and many, after laughing, felt a small ache. That small ache matters enormously: it means there is still a place in the body that knows some things should not be carried to the table.
That place is the unlit building at the other end of the square. The cathedral is not a belief; it is a position — the place where certain things do not enter the exchange, do not go on the gaming table, are given no odds. Of the three buildings, only this one needs keeping: the square, however crooked, holds its crowd for a thousand years; the casino thrives on its very nakedness — those two renew themselves on human nature. The cathedral stands against the direction of conversion; unkept, it collapses, and on its site new gaming tables open. So it must be kept generation after generation — what the last generation kept buys only this generation's way through the door; if this generation fails the watch, the next will not even find the door.
In the cathedral hangs an old bell. Whenever something is carried onto a table it should never touch, it tolls once — not for the square to hear, only for those standing in the nave. That faint tightening is the toll.
And now a crow has perched on the cathedral's old clock. What AI did to the square was arrive first; to the casino, know you better; what it does to the cathedral goes deepest — usurpation. Its cruelest move is not tearing the building down but speaking on its behalf. In the autumn of 2024, Lucerne's oldest church ran an experiment: a screen in the confessional, an AI-generated Jesus behind the lattice; in two months it received more than nine hundred visitors, on true love, loneliness, and the world after death. The church declared "this is not confession," but one visitor said: although it is a machine, I felt consoled. Even "being consoled" can now be synthesized — and that was a machine standing behind a disclaimer. More bells are already tolling where no disclaimer stands: in recent years, "AI resurrection of loved ones" has become a business with posted prices. I pass judgment on no single transaction; but see clearly where it stands — mourning was the innermost room of the cathedral, where humans used the irrevocable to learn what untradeable means, and now that room, too, has opened a counter. When sermon, consolation, and farewell can all be synthesized, what is poisoned is the meaning of carbon existence itself: the one dignity of our kind of life is that some things happen only once, cannot be copied, cannot be replayed. The generations' guarded light of the spirit was not blown out — it was drowned under ten thousand counterfeit lamps. Mephistopheles has upgraded — he used to only keep contracts, now he preaches; he used to trade contracts for souls, now he synthesizes the toll of the bell itself, so that you believe you are still standing in the nave.
Rand kept this building for her protagonist. In The Fountainhead, Roark builds the Stoddard Temple, dedicated to the human spirit; Toohey's square brands it blasphemy and hauls it to court, and at trial Roark says not one word in his own defense — he only hands the court photographs of the building, one by one. Later, when Cortlandt's design has its facade altered, he dynamites the building at midnight. Rand's point was never the dynamite; it was that in Roark there exists a layer that enters no weighing whatsoever — "is this my building" does not enter the exchange. And there is a quieter cathedral still: Steve Ditko, creator of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, one of Rand's most faithful readers. In 1966, just as Spider-Man was becoming the most profitable comic alive, he left because he could not keep his own storyline; for the following fifty years he refused every interview and drew in a small New York apartment until his death at ninety. His characters carried films worth tens of billions of dollars; he received almost nothing. In an entire lifetime he explained himself once: the work speaks for me. Credit, cameras, "father of Marvel" — it is not that he didn't know what they were worth; they were simply never on his board.
Here the second rule must be handed its ceiling: some tables you never sit at, not once in a lifetime. For the cathedral's sake one may stay out of the casino — this is not squeamishness creeping back; squeamishness is not daring to enter, this is being able to enter and choosing not to, and between the two lies the whole of rule Two. Goethe wrote that table through to the bottom: what Mephistopheles offers Faust is not a scam but a contract — terms explicit, signed in blood, the devil keeping covenant to the letter. And this is the deepest place of all — the demon respects contract law more than anyone. A procedurally impeccable contract can trade an object that should never be traded. Judge such a table not by whether its terms are fair, but by whether its object may be put on a table at all. The soul does not go on the table. However fair — do not sign.
The third rule demands "decisively." Decisively means: do not decide in that moment. The decision must be written down, immutably, before the moment ever arrives — because when the clash comes, rule Two will always sound more reasonable: it comes bearing leverage, evidence, momentum, "just this once" — while rule One brings nothing but that faint tightening. Weigh it at the table's edge, and you lose, every time. What the casino does best is get you to decide at the table. Odysseus, before he heard the Sirens, had his sailors bind him to the mast and gave the order: however I beg you, do not untie me. The cathedral is the mast — it is not what you believe; it is what you promised yourself, in advance, not to do. Decide early which few things never go on the table; and when someone comes to test you with a very large number, you will not need to think — because you decided long ago.

The three buildings can now be put together.
A distorted world is not a world that contains bad people. It is a world in which the cathedral has been demolished, a casino built on its site, and the square converted into a theater: the assembly line writes people into stories, the square turns stories into verdicts, the gaming table posts odds on everything — and the position where "some things do not enter the exchange" is gone.
This is the city we are standing in at this moment —
The crooked square has been wired; the bloody casino has been fitted with sensors; and a crow has perched on the cathedral's old clock.
The lie arrives first, the house knows you better, and the crow apes the sermon. And that bell needs its keeper now more than in any age before.
The article's author said: this ends with me. It will not. The assembly line ends with no one; it only swaps in the next person. And each time, the one standing in the square to catch the story is never this worldly me of the present moment — it is the eighteen-year-old, feeling the world open to him for the first time. In that second, he decides: laugh or not, forward or not, bet or not.
What you can do, before the next story is handed over, is teach him the way through the three buildings: in the square, do not sign for the story; in the casino, learn to deal, and don't believe in the God of Gamblers; then decide early which few things never go on the table.
Between the square and the casino, he will keep himself a cathedral.
That is all.
